Shoshin, or the Zen Buddhist principle of “beginner’s mind,” is something I’ve thought about a lot over my working life, both as a poet and in various jobs. The concept suggests, regardless of the amount of experience or knowledge one obtains, that to retain the openness, eagerness, and humility of the novice is vital.
